Thousands of Louisianans Sign Petition Spearheaded by Senator Sharon Hewitt Urging Governor Edwards to Open Louisiana

Baton Rouge, LA — Yesterday, Louisiana State Senator Sharon Hewitt launched an online petition to give Louisiana citizens a voice in response to the Governor’s “stay at home” order and the corresponding economic shutdown.

In just the first few hours, thousands of Louisianans joined the movement and signed the petition urging the Governor to consider a regional restart of the state economy.

Across the state, working families have lost their jobs, and local businesses are growing frustrated by the Governor’s statewide “stay at home” order and pushing for a meaningful reopening of our state’s economy.

“Every day, I hear from my constituents that feel this shutdown takes their voice away,” explained Hewitt, “We can maintain our focus on protecting lives while working to restore livelihoods,” she added.

Earlier this month, President Trump released his guidelines for “Opening Up America Again.” The President’s plan provides Governors with the option to open each state regionally, or on a parish by parish basis.

“COVID-19 has impacted each area differently; what is best for Orleans Parish might not be the best plan for the other 63 parishes, Hewitt explained. “Now is not the time for a one size fits all approach.”

Senator Hewitt is working to gather signatures and will deliver the completed petition to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
